International architectural competition, 1st place, zoning decision, completion of the first phase, and design supervision of the second phase.
We won the architectural competition by minimizing the building’s volume into an abstract cube integrated with the square, while other proposals built up the entire site. Thanks to its timeless and minimalist concept, the building’s design has remained timeless from 2004, when the competition ended, to the present day, as construction is only now underway.
The Janáček Cultural Center is a world-class concert hall that, thanks to its unique acoustics, would attract the world’s best artists and symphony orchestras, thereby strengthening the position of the Czech music scene in the European context. At the same time, however, the hall should create conditions for hosting theater, opera, or film festivals. The chosen location for the building is befitting of its purpose; the site stands in the very heart of the city, surrounded by other significant buildings such as the Moravian Gallery, the Hotel International, City Hall, and, last but not least, the Besední dům, home to the Brno Philharmonic.
